How Peppermint Oil Became My Saving Grace

I’ve never been one to have much head tensions or aches.

Although many people I know struggle with head tensions or aches, they weren’t one of my main health struggle.

However, proper digestion and the health of my intestinal tract or gut, was.

Even after following a more whole foods diet, I still struggled with gas, bloating, constipation, and other digestive issues at times. And there are so many physiological reasons for that, but regardless, digestive issues was and still is a struggle at times.

Peppermint and Digestive Health

So when I first got introduced to essential oils, peppermint was one of the oils I learned that could be good for just about anything, but especially for digestion and gut health. Peppermint essential oil may:

  • Help reduce bloating, gas and occasional indigestion
  • Promote health respiratory function and clear breathing
  • Promote alertness and focus
  • Support the management of cravings
  • Serve as a natural muscle relaxant, discomfort reliever, and increased body temperature
  • Provide allergy relief for those struggling with sinus or allergies
  • Promote skin health and provide calming effects on skin inflammation
  • Provide relief to head and neck tension

Therefore, since gut health was my main concern I naturally used peppermint and shared it with others as a solution for that issue. I often used peppermint oil to ease bloating, gas, indigestion and even constipation pains – and it worked for me. I would either simply put a drop in my water or tea when feeling an upset stomach, rub the oil on my stomach, or take some in a capsule. I also shared peppermint with others who also struggled with digestion and gut issues, and they have always reported back that peppermint oil has helped them. YES!

However, knowing many individuals struggled with head tensions, I also shared peppermint oil as a natural solution for that as well. Many also reported how peppermint oil had helped alleviate the pain from head tensions- even those who used to dislike peppermint! One person in particular who didn’t like peppermint actually ended up getting ANOTHER BOTTLE of the oil just to make sure she always had some on hand when a head tension arose. Powerful, right?

And last night, I finally experienced the great power that peppermint oil holds to help alleviate head tension when I experience the worst migraine I have ever experienced in my life.

Peppermint and Head Tension

These last few months, I will be the first to tell you I haven’t rested much or slept well. Working full time in my accounting job, building up my health coaching practice, and also sharing essential oils with others has just left me with not a lot of time to rest and recover. In general, I struggle with resting when I have a lot of things to do, but especially these last few months.

When busy, I also sometimes forget to eat enough to fuel my daily activities and workouts. I often forget to eat enough carbohydrates, which in the past, has been the main cause of head tension that I’ve felt.

So last night, when I had a migraine I immediately tied it to not sleeping enough this week and also not eating enough yesterday. So at dinner, I made sure to eat some plantain with my meal to get those extra carbohydrates in.

Yet, the migraine continued and only got worse. My vision got blurry and it honestly felt like someone was slowly pushing a sharp object through my brain.

I drank water and tried to sleep, but it just didn’t work.

I finally got out of bed in the wee hours of the morning and did two things: 1) fixed myself a Fuel protein/carbohydrate shake with a banana and 2) looked up to see what essential oils I had that I could rub on my head, temples, diffuse, drink or just do whatever it took to make the pain go away.

The shake helped because I was definitely lacking nutrients and fuel. But you want to know what really helped the pain to finally be to a place it was bearable ? Essential oils, in particular peppermint.

I took peppermint (a lot of it), marjoram, frankincense, and lavender, rubbed them together and lathered my temples, head, and neck with the oil mixture. I also cupped my hands and inhaled the smell to calm myself to be able to sleep.

Now, since the pain was so severe, the relief was not instant. I had to lay in bed and gently keep rubbing my head and also smelling the oils. I also added even more peppermint, knowing that was the top oil that could help with head tension. I then tried to clear everything from my mind, force myself to relax, and push through the pain.

Yet, slowly but surely, I felt my body start to relax and the pain subside. And before I knew it, I was asleep and woke up this morning having gone from a pain level of 10 to a pain level of 4. Yes, sleep and the protein shake helped. But I know, that last night peppermint was my saving grace.

And although my migraine did continue throughout the day, after taking some peppermint, sleeping, eating, and rolling out certain knots in my muscles linked to the tension in my head, the pain level went down and was no where near what it was the night before.

Peppermint and Your Health

My experience with peppermint last night only further confirms in my heart that there is great power in essential oils. Whether someone struggles with digestion, head tension, seasonal threats, sleeping, joint discomfort (do I have a story for that!), fertility, anxious feelings or more – I promise you, there is an oil that may help with that.

I cannot hold the goodness of these oils to myself, and quite frankly, it would be an injustice if I do. I have experienced firsthand transformation in my own health issues using these oils, and have heard testimonies from others on how essential oils have transformed their health as well.

Maybe you don’t struggle with digestion, head tension, sleeping or any of the other health concerns I listed above. But maybe you do struggle and have chronically struggled with that one thing, that you feel will never get better and have just lost all hope in.

I can’t promise you that essential oils can heal or alleviate that one thing, but I can tell essential oils won’t make it any worse. Essential oils could be that one thing you’ve been waiting for, the solution your health needs – today.
