New Year, New You: 5 Keys to Your Health Resolutions’ Success – (Part 5): Mindset

Mindset has been something I’ve been exploring a lot over the last few months. It started when I was going over a session with a health coaching client on healthy mindsets around our health and wellness, and how to create healthy habits.

As I was preparing for the session, I realized how DESPERATELY I needed to go through the materials not just for my own mindset towards health, but mindset towards my business and life as well!

You see, I realized that my natural tendency is to be pessimistic when things aren’t going well and to not be grateful for the WINS in my health and business. It’s so easy to become obsessed with where you AREN’T AT instead of celebrating where you ARE AT.

It is absolutely essential that we master our mindset if we want to live a truly healthy, joyful and abundant life. How we think about food, our bodies, and who we are will drive whether our thoughts and actions, and either lead to success or being stuck where we are at in our health.

So here are three things I’ve started doing (and I recommend you do too) to foster a healthier mindset towards your health and other areas of your lives.

1. IDENTIFY YOUR THOUGHT PATTERNS: Sit back and honestly think about what your normal thought patterns are when it comes to food, your body and your health. Do you think your body is a gift worth treasuring and taking care of, or do you see it as something that still has a long way to go until it’s perfect? Do you think food is your enemy and something you love, but doesn’t quite love you the same way back? Whatever your thought patterns are, write them down.

2. CREATE POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS: An affirmation is simply affirming something that is true and right. Take one of your negative thought patterns you identified above and write one positive affirmation to counteract that. For example, if you wrote down that your body will never be at a healthy size, your positive affirmation would be “My body is beautiful right here, right now. It isn’t where I want it to fully be, but it will be because I am doing my best to love and treasure it for what is is.” Try to make at least one affirmation to counteract each negative thought pattern you identified in step one.

3. RECORD YOURSELF SPEAKING TRUTH: This is a game changer. Rather than just writing the information and speaking it out loud, record the affirmation and play it back. I used an app called “Think Up” to help me with this, where you can record 4 affirmations for free and then have them all playback to music. And you want to know what happened when I first did that? I cried. I cried because for the first time in my life, rather than someone speaking truth over my life, I WAS speaking it and claiming it as truth right here, right now.
