Getting the Body You Want Naturally: (Part 2: Essential Oils 101)

When I first really started looking into essential oils, it was out of desperation. I had a bad case of tendinitis and a runny nose and cough that just didn’t want to go away.

However, someone was gracious enough to introduce me to a soothing rub and a protective blend of oils that gave me hope as the oils started to soothe the discomfort in my wrist, and started to support and boost my immune system.

It was from then that I understood the importance of caring for our bodies naturally not only with the foods we eat, exercises we do, or sleep we manage to have, but also with the wellness products we use on our skin, take internally, and smell regularly.

So to me now, getting the body I want naturally has expanded from just eating well and exercising practically, to also including essential oils in my life to help me eat well, exercise effectively, manage stress and sleep, reduce the toxic load around me, and more.

Whatever your goals are for your health this new year, I’m excited to journey with you these next few weeks so that you can reach those goals and get the body you desire naturally through sustainable healthy habits and essential oils and wellness products.

Part 2: Essential Oils 101

As a follow up to last week’s blog post on the Wellness Pyramid and in preparation for the weeks ahead, in this week’s video I go through the basics of what essential oils are, the different ways you can use them, why quality matters, and invite you into some opportunities for you to learn more about essential oils specifically.

Summary of the Video

As a way of summary, here are some of the points and questions I answer in the video above:

1. What are essential oils? Essential oils are naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They are the part of the plant that protects it against environmental threats and provides other beneficial properties. They are also highly concentrated when distilled for purity, potency and efficiency and can be up to 50 to 70 times more potent than herbs.

2. Are essential oils effective? Essential oils are effective because they penetrate inside the cellular level of the body. Since the oils are natural nutrients from plants and have a unique chemical structure, they penetrate our cells’ membranes and is able to pass directly through the skin for immediate systemic response to topical application. This allows essential oils to get to the source of many health concerns within the cells.

3. How do can I use essential oils? Most essential oils can be used in three main ways: aromatically (inhaling straight from the bottle or with a diffuser), topically (right to the trouble area, bottom of your feet and can be diluted with a carrier oil like coconut oil for sensitive skin), and internally (depends on the quality and purity of the oils, but can be taken in water, empty capsule or under the tongue)

4. What can essential oils be used for? Essential oils have a wide range of usage, varying from emotional aromatherapy, supporting the immune system, soothing joint tension/discomfort and upset stomachs, promoting energy boosts and healthy respiratory functions, and even natural hair, skin and cleaning products.

5. Does it matter what brand I use? I use doTERRA essential oils because of their 3rd party testing when it comes to the purity and potency of the oil, as well as their co-impact sourcing where they source the oils from the areas in the world that the plants where the oils come from grow best. I also love the values of the company in that they give back and care for the people and countries they are sourcing the oils from.

6. How can I get oils of my own? doTERRA offers anyone who wants to get oils of their own opportunities to get the oils at wholesale cost (30% cheaper than retail!) regardless of where you live. They offer amazing starter kits and great specials every month for those interested in getting oils of their own for the first time, as well as those who wish to continue to purchase oils. If getting oils of your own interest you at all, be sure to let me know as I would love to walk you through the best oils and kits that suit your particular health goals and needs.

7. How will I know what to do with the oils once I get them? Both my team and I make it a priority to offer continuing education classes for everyone who chooses to get oils so they can continue to learn all the various ways they can use their oils. My team and I love these oils and are passionate about seeing others empowered to take care of their health more naturally and sustainable through the usage of essential oils.
