BASICS OF GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL

With various beautifying purposes, Geranium essential oil promotes healthy, glowing skin and hair, while providing a sweet, floral aroma.

A member of the Pelargonium genus of flower species, geraniums are grown for their beauty and as a staple of the perfume industry. While there are over 200 different varieties of Pelargonium flowers, only a few are used as essential oils. Uses of Geranium essential oil date back to ancient Egypt when Egyptians used Geranium oil to beautify skin and for other benefits.

As an essential oil, Geranium has been used to promote the appearance of clear skin and healthy hair—making it ideal for skin and hair care products. It also helps calm nerves and lessens feelings of stress. Geranium is also known to naturally repel insects.

SCIENCE OF GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL

Let’s learn all about the science of what makes Geranium Essential Oil so amazing!

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS

The main constituents of doTERRA’s Geranium is Citronellol and Geraniol.

“Citronellol is a monoterpene alcohol that highly contributes to geranium oil’s ability to repel insects. Another main chemical component found in Geranium oil is geraniol. Geraniol is also a monoterpene alcohol.

Recent studies by Egyptian researchers, highlighted by the doTERRA Science blog, suggest that orally ingested geraniol positively affects multiple biochemical pathways in the colon, which helps to maintain the health of colon cells.” – doTERRA Blog Spotlight

SOURCING OF GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL

Here’s a bit about where doTERRA’s Geranium comes from and how it’s created!

SOURCING – MADAGASCAR AND KENYA

doTERRA now sources their Geranium from Madagascar and Kenya. Each plant can be cut 2-3x a year and the oil is distilled from the leaves, stems, and flowers.

The geranium plant is a fragrant member of the Pelargonium species. Also known as Pelargonium graveolens, this plant is native to South Africa. The plant produces fragrant, green leaves and rose-colored flowers and can reach up to one meter in height. A geranium grows best in full sun and well-drained, fertile soils. Therefore, Madagascar and Kenya make GREAT places to grow quality Geranium essential oil!

SAFETY OF GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL

Geranium essential oil is a very versatile and safe oil to use.

WHO: It’s great for all ages, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and even dogs.
