SCIENCE OF BREATHE ESSENTIAL OIL

Breathe (Respiriatory Blend) contains laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, melaleuca, lemon, cardamom, ravintsara, and ravensara!

Here is a summary of the chemical family and constituent of a few oils below:

– Peppermint – Menthol, Menthone, a-pinenes, b-pinenes, Methyl acetate
– Eucalyptus – Eucalyptol, Alpha-terpineol
– Melaleuca – terpinenes, y-terpinenes, terpinene-4-ol and p-cymene.
– Lemon – limonene and beta-pinene
– Cardamom – Terpinyl acetate, I,8 cineole, Linalool

You can learn more about Peppermint, Melaleuca and Lemon’s chemical constituents in the blog posts I did on those below.

– Lemon: http://www.madewell345.com/2017/11/18/lemon-essential-oil/
– Peppermint: http://www.madewell345.com/2017/11/13/peppermint-essential-oil/
– Melaleuca: http://www.madewell345.com/2017/11/03/melaleuca-tea-tree-essential-oil/

But for this post, we are going to focus on Eucalyptus!

“The two main chemical components of Eucalyptus oil are Eucalyptol and alpha-terpineol. Eucalyptol is one of several prominent oxides found in a specific group of essential oils. These oxides provide many powerful benefits, most of which are found in Eucalyptus oil. Many oxides, such as Eucalyptol, offer powerful cleansing benefits and a produce a soothing, cooling vapor. When specific oxides are applied topically, they can also rejuvenate and invigorate the skin. Eucalyptus oil contains a very high concentration of Eucalyptol, which makes Eucalyptus oil an ideal oil for obtaining many of these oxide benefits.” – doTERRA on Eucalyptus Uses and Benefits

Thus, because of the high Eucalyptol content in the Eucalyptus oil, it allows the Breathe blend to provide that cooling, soothing vapor when used aromatically or applied to the skin.

Amazing huh? 🙂

Furthermore, the chemical constituents of Breathe Blend give the essential oil the following properties:

SOURCING OF BREATHE ESSENTIAL OIL

Because Breathe is a blend of oils and natural components, the oils come from different places!

– PEPPERMINT: Washington State – doTERRA’s peppermint essential oil is sourced from Washington State from local peppermint farmers. The Pacific Northwest is for peppermint because of the high amounts of rainfall they have each year. This gives the peppermint a high menthol content, which gives it its sweet, minty aroma and flavor.

– EUCALYPTUS: Australia – Eucalyptus oil hails from Australia, where various parts of the tree from its bark to its leaves are used by the Aboriginals for tools, shields, musical instruments, and health purposes.Australia is home to almost all 700 known species of eucalyptus trees. Furthermore, the trees consume a large amount of water. Thus, wherever the tree is planted, there must be enough water to help both the Eucalyptus trees and others around it survive – Australia provides that climate.

– CARDAMOM: Guatemala – doTERRA Cardamom essential oil is produced from cardamom seeds grown in Guatemala, where doTERRA has established a Co-Impact Sourcing initiative to help local growers improve their quality of life.By providing a new drying facility for the cardamom plants in Sika’abe, Guatemala, doTERRA has helped improve the efficiency of the cardamom harvesting and production process. Before, cardamom growers had to travel far distances to dry the product, which was problematic due to the short shelf life of cardamom seeds.

– LEMON: Italy – doTERRA sources Lemon essential oil from citrus orchards in Sicily, Italy, where families who have grown lemon and bergamot for generations help grow and harvest the lemons that are eventually used for doTERRA Lemon oil. In the past, the economic downturn caused many Sicilian orchards to close; however, through Co-Impact Sourcing®, doTERRA has provided a business opportunity for growers who wish to continue their family tradition of running an orchard.

– MELALEUCA: Australia – doTERRA’s Melaleuca comes from Australia, where the plant itself is indigenous. More commonly known as “Tea Tree”, Melaleuca Essential Oil has over 92 different compounds and limitless applications.
The leaves of the Melaleuca tree were used by the Aborigines of Australia for centuries. They would crush the leaves and inhale the oil to promote clear breathing and apply the leaves directly to the skin to help with recovery.

All of these oils and places makes this beautiful blend multi-cultural don’t you think?

So amazing how so much care and thought goes into WHERE each oil is sourced from and WHICH oils are included in this blend.

SAFETY OF BREATHE ESSENTIAL OIL

Breathe essential oil is a very versatile and safe oil to use. However, read on below to learn more about how you can use it safely.

WHO: It’s great for all ages, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and even dogs. However, with younger children, I would recommend this be diluted due to its high menthol component.

APPLICATION: This oil can be used AROMATICALLY and TOPICALLY, but not internally due to the Eucalyptus in there (which isn’t recommended for internal use). It can also be applied on “neat” – can go on without a carrier oil. However, I would recommend dilution and carrier oil for children.

Like most essential oils, try to avoid contact with the eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

DOSAGE: None – but dilute if necessary (especially due to the ginger).

SHELF LIFE: Typical shelf life is roughly 5 years as well! You can look at the bottom of your doTERRA lavender bottle for the expiration date.

SAFETY PRECAUTION: However, be sure to keep OUT of the reach of children because even though it’s safe, we want to be careful they don’t OVEREXPOSE themselves to it. Also, if you are pregnant or under a doctor’s care, feel free to consult with them if you’re concerned.

Note – this information is just based on my understanding and is just for doTERRA’s Breathe you will need to do your research on other lemon essential oils.Note – this information is just based on my understanding and is just for doTERRA’s Frankincense- you will need to do your research on other lemon essential oils.
