SCIENCE OF CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

Here’s some information on the science of cedarwood!

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS

The main constituents of doTERRA’s Cedarwood are α-cedrene, cedrol, thujosene.

“Cedarwood falls under a group of chemicals known as sesquiterpenes. Essential oils that contain sesquiterpenes are commonly known for their ability to promote grounding and balance of emotions when used aromatically. Cedarwood oil includes the main sesquiterpene constituents cedrene, and thujopsene, which help improve the appearance of skin and promote grounding of emotions and emotional balance. Similar to Vetiver, Patchouli, and Sandalwood oil, Cedar oil is commonly known as a grounding oil because of its chemical makeup.” – doTERRA Blog

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES

Furthermore, the chemical constituents of Essential Oil give the essential oil the following properties:

– Anti-inflammatory (reduces inflammation)
– Sedative (promotes calm and sleep; reduces agitation; tranquilizing)
– Cleansing, purifying, germ-destroying
– Astringent (contracts tissues, generally of the skin; reduces minor bleeding)
– Insecticidal (kills insect and bugs)

SOURCING OF CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

Here’s a bit about where doTERRA’s Cedarwood comes from and how it’s created!

SOURCING – USA!

doTERRA’s Cedarwood is sourced from the U.S.A!

“With the botanical name of Juniperus virginiana, doTERRA Cedarwood essential oil comes from a tree more commonly known as the red cedar. The wood is steam distilled, the oil is collected from the distillation, and then it is bottled allowing us to enjoy and benefit from it.

The red cedar tree is able to withstand extreme climates and can tolerate most soil types. This ability may come from the cold, high altitude climates cedar trees are natively from. Depending on soil conditions, the tree can reach anywhere from 16 to nearly 100 feet high. It is also a species with an unusually long lifespan, with some trees reaching 900 years old.

Essential oil from different varieties of cedar trees has a rich historical past. The cedar of Lebanon is thought to be one of the first essential oils extracted from nature. The Sumerians regarded the cedar tree to be the Tree of Life. Ancient tribes believed God held the energy of the Cosmos on earth in the cedar and that the wood was sacred, gifting those worthy with power, greatness, and immortality. The Egyptians incorporated it into their embalming rituals. The Phoenicians and Assyrians even used cedar to build fleets of ships.” – doTERRA Product Blog Spotlight

SAFETY OF CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

Below are some thoughts to consider around safety for Cedarwood

Cedarwood is an amazing oil for all ages.

WHO: It’s great for all ages, but always see your doctor if you are concerned.

APPLICATION: Cedarwood is a great oil to use topically and aromatically.

Like most essential oils, try to avoid contact with the eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

DOSAGE: It depends.

Here are some recommended dilution guidelines (Age and Dosage Amount):

– Up to 3 Months: 1 Drop in 1 Tablespoon Carrier Oil
– Up to 24 Months: 3 Drops in 1 Tablespoon Carrier Oil
– 2-6 Years: 5 Drops in 1 Tablespoon Carrier Oil
– 6-15 Years: 1 Drop in 1 Teaspoon Carrier Oil
– 15 + Years: 5 Drops in 1 Teaspoon Carrier Oil

SHELF LIFE: Typical shelf life is roughly 4-5 years as well! You can look at the bottom of your doTERRA cedarwood bottle for the expiration date.

SAFETY PRECAUTION: However, be sure to keep OUT of the reach of children because even though it’s safe, we want to be careful they don’t OVEREXPOSE themselves to it. Also, if you are pregnant or under a doctor’s care, feel free to consult with them if you’re concerned.

Note – this information is just based on my understanding and is just for doTERRA’s Cedarwood – you will need to do your research on other essential oils like this.

EMOTIONS BEHIND CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

I though in addition to talking about the basics, science, sourcing, safety, and uses of essential oils, I would also do a section on the emotional aspect of each oil!

This is taken from the “Emotions & Essential Oils: A Reference Guide for Emotional Healing” 2017 6th Edition

THE OIL OF COMMUNITY

‘Cedarwood brings people together to experience the strength and value of community. Those in need of Cedarwood struggle to form bonds with social groups. This can often be due to an overdeveloped sense of individuality. Rather than allowing themselves to be supported by family, friends, or a community, they live in excessive self-reliance. On the other hand, the individual’s difficulty forming social roots may also stem from feeling disconnected and seperate from human family.
.
Cedarwood inspires the feeling of belonging and assists the heart in opening to receive the love and support of other people. It invites the strong-willed individual to couple the strength of individuality with the supportive power of community.

Cedarwood supports individuals in seeing they are not alone; life is a share experience. Cedarwood also assists in opening the awareness of individuals to the support system that is already available to them, such as friends or family that have been overlooked. It invites individuals to both give and receive, so they may experience the strength of groups and the joy of relationships.

NEGATIVE EMOTIONS: Inability to form social bonds, lonely feeling seperate from the human family, antisocial.

POSITIVE PROPERTIES: Emotionally connected, belonging, supported, social bonds, sociable, community oriented.

COMPANION OILS: Marjoram, Birch.

SUGGESTED USES:
– Aromatic: Inhale from bottle or diffuse
– Topical: Dilue 3-4 drops with carrier oil and apply on arms, legs, or bottoms of feet
